Ready for the Dutch touch? The last training week

The best moment to be in ‘s-Hertogenbosch: Theaterfestival Boulevard, international artists & audiences.

The city ofs-Hertogenbosch (hard to pronounce, but you can also say ‘Den Bosch’) will welcome our five Dance Makers on Saturday 4th August during the 34th edition of Theaterfestival Boulevard. Artistic leader Heleen Volman (DansBrabant) and dramaturg Nina Aalders (Boulevard) will accompany them in a hopefully enriching and joyful Training Week in which the private rehearsal studio frequently opens up to the bubbling festival. The final moves and thoughts of this week will be shared on Saturday 11th August.

Coming to Den Bosch means that Roberta, Nataša, Jija, Koldo and Sophie will be having their last Training Week. Their journey started in October 2017 in Ljubljana during the City of Women Festival, continued in Bologna during Gender Bender Festival, Leeds – Yorkshire Dance, and Paso a 2 – Certamen Coreogràfico de Madrid.

Workshops, performances and meetings

On the day of arrival, the Dutch Performing Gender dancemaker Jija Sohn will perform her solo Kyabajo at the festival. In this piece, she seduces her audience in a game of oppression, power and liberation. Afterwards, she will join us in a conversation about her work. Next to Jija’s performance, there is opportunity to watch performances by a.o. Katja Heitmann and Guilherme Miotto, a chapel route of three Stabat Mater performances, Igor & Moreno and Pippo Delbono.

Dancer and choreographer Daniel Mariblanca will be sharing his warming up with the dancemakers and give us a preview of his work 71BODIES 1DANCE, a multifaceted project – dance, film, photography – inspired by personal stories and experiences of 71 people whose relationship with sex and gender is less than obvious.

Another performer at our festival, Liz Aggiss (whose performance Slap and Tickle was part of the Training Week in Bologna), will give a movement based workshop on the grotesque body and working with stereotypes within your personal body.

Choreographer Liat Waysbort will give a movement workshop on the gendered body and choreographer Keren Levi will work around intimacy in her trainings.

A special evening is planned for a class organized by Boulevard, called Theater (mee)maken – Experience Theater with us. The dance makers are invited to confer with a group of people that want to learn more about ‘the making of’, but are not (frequent) theatre or dance visitors themselves.  This evening, the dance makers can experiment with the communication of and about their work with this audience.

Final Sharing

The week will provide the dance makers with an abundance of raw material to implement into their performative sketches, which will be publicly presented on the last day of the training, Saturday 11th August, at 8 pm at Bank van Leening, followed by a conversation with the audience. The programme is called 5 Miniaturen en een gesprek – 5 Miniatures and a Conversation.

Among our guests, dance makers, experience experts, otherwise interested audiences, also our Minister of Culture Ingrid van Engelshoven and the Arts Counselor of the municipality of ’s-Hertogenbosch are present.
