Performing Gender restarts from Ljubljana
City of Women festival is ready to host the first Training Week of the new edition of Performing Gender
The International Festival of Contemporary Arts – City of Women, taking place in Ljubljana at the beginning of October, each year invites between forty and sixty women artists and theorists and attracts several thousand visitors from all ages, professions and interests, to witness a transdisciplinary and experimental festival investigating identities, cultural and gender studies and theory, women's rights and representations.
The 23rd edition of the festival, from 7th to 13th October, is built around three words: nation, nature, norm. Eye-opening artistic creations, workshops, talks and conference, social gatherings will address topics as abortion, legally unrecognised and non-normative families, biology, feminism. Many artists such as Oona Doherty, Anna Linder and Éric Fassin will have a fundamental role to increase knowledge about festival issues.
In this context, our European project Performing Gender - Dance Makes Differences will make its absolute debut in Slovenia, holding the first Training Week of its new edition.
Koldo Arostegui González, Roberta Racis, Jija Sohn, Sophie Unwin and Nataša Živković, the five dance makers involved in the project, will meet together for the first time for an intense capacity building week, made out of encounters with local, regional feminist and LGBTIQ activists, lectures by international guests and physical workshops with guest choreographers. The week will foresee interventions and exchanges with the local dance dramaturg involved in the project, the writer and art critic Tea Hvala; the main focus of the training is going to be on different yet intertwined aspects of reproductive freedom.
The week will provide the dance makers with an abundance of raw material for the development of their performative sketches, which will be publicly presented on the last day of the training, Friday 13th October, at 18.30 in the Old Power Station, the venue hosting most of the activities of the week.
