A playwright and filmmaker towards dance and body movement
Sergio Martínez Vila was born in Pola de Siero (Asturias) in 1984. He is a playwright, a stage director, a screenwriter and a filmmaker.
He has a degree in Audiovisual Communication (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) and has studied Filmmaking Studies at ECAM (Escuela de Cine y del Audiovisual de Madrid). He was a Spanish Language teacher at the Cervantes Institute in New Delhi (India), before settling again in Madrid in 2012. Since then, he has worked in theatre and filmmaking processes while creating his own company, Los Bárbaros, and taught playwrighting techniques (Escuela Contemporánea de Humanidades / Teatros Luchana).
Since 2013 he has premiered several works in different spaces in Madrid’s alternative scene, some of which he also directed, including Profiles and The tolerant mother. In October 2015 he premiered his first feature as a screenwriter and filmmaker, La espera (THE WAIT). Starring Angela Boix and Niklas Schmich, the film was selected for the competitive section of the ‘Abycine’ Film Festival. A month later, La espera received the GAVA AWARD for the 2015 best film (fiction) of the year at the Gijón International Film Festival. He has received the XL Born Playwrighting Award for The shepherd’s wife’s obedience, and the X LAM Award (Leopoldo Alas Mínguez) for The ocean against the rocks.
In 2016 he was included in the IV SGAE Theatrical Writing Laboratory, selected by the CDN (Centro Dramático Nacional) to participate in the XI Obrador d’estiu (Sala Beckett, Barcelona), and selected by the prestigious Sala Cuarta Pared, within the framework of Contemporary Theater Space (ETC). In 2017 he started training in dance and body movement with the choreographer and performer Mónica Valenciano (El cuerpo polifónico / The polyphonic body, Estudio 3). His project Family Games was released at the María Guerrero’s Theatre during CDN’S season in December 2017.
