Maria Popova’s practice is rooted in improvisation and interdisciplinary collaboration as a means of exploring the moving body in relation to other art forms. As an artist Maria has transitioned from visual arts to pursue dance and choreography in further education, bringing forward her interest in the body and its orientation in space. Maria is interested in how her practice is able to open up a dialogue between art forms.
As a solo artist, Maria has established herself as a co-founder of Combined: Improvisation Collective, who produce improvisation-based works by encouraging new partnerships between Leeds-based artists. The collective seeks to host pop-up performance events that serve to strengthen the local artistic community by bridging the gaps between graduates of the city’s major institutes; encouraging artistic exchange. Furthermore, Maria assumes the role of a Widening Participation Ambassador, for Leeds Beckett University, working as an advisor and a mentor for younger students.
