Madrid Training
Description
Paso a 2 hosted the fourth training week in Madrid, Spain from July 14th to the 21st at Las Naves Matadero and La Neomudéjar.
The week opened with an intensive morning workshop focusing on the political body, with dancemaker Poliana Lima, who participated in the Performing Gender project from 2013 to 2015. In the afternoon, the participants visited La Neomudéjar contemporary art centre, home of the TransFeminist Archive, and venue of the training week’s public events.
Performing Gender participants met with the guest speaker, activist Qurro Camacho to talk about gender diversity in the Gypsy community, and what it means to be “the other” in a community that is already considered “other”. The 5 dance makers were introduced to the local context through a guided tour of Madrid as a city known for its work in the achievement of rights for gender diversity and the LGTBI community.
It took place also another morning workshop session with the photographer and audiovisual artist Eva Viera about gender as a social construct, including a focus on the specific material each dancemaker was developing. In addition to her own work in photography, film, video art and activism, Viera collaborates closely with dance companies, performing arts festivals and contemporary art centres, including the Casa Encendida and Centro Danza Canal, in Madrid. She also provided audiovisual documentation of the Madrid Training Week.
The Madrid Training Week took place during the Veranos de la Villa summer festival when the Uruguayan choreographer and visual artist Tamara Cubas presented her “Trilogía Antropofágica” (Cannibalistic Trilogy) at Las Naves Matadero. Making reference to the aesthetic and cultural movement in 1920’s Brasil’s post-colonial identity, Cubas reflected upon power, the group, devices, the other, desire, while “cannibalising” 3 choreographies by Brazilian dancemakers whose work she admires. The participants attended all three Acts of this Trilogy, which inspired some powerful dialogues.

Public Programme
July 18th, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Performing Gender dancemakers and dramaturge will discuss aspects of their research and ongoing solo work, which will be shared in each participating country with 10 young dancers between October and December 2018.
There is a limited number of places for this workshop and priority will be given to dancers who have already answered our open-call, as well as dancemakers who have expressed interest in the project.

Dramaturge Sergio Martínez Vila will present his research on Gender Diversity in Primitive Religions.

The dancemakers will share the ongoing working process of their solos, which have continued to develop during the week, with the collaboration of Sergio Martínez Vila. There will be a dialogue with the audience afterwards.
